NEVER CLIMB ON WET SANDSTONE

After rain or snow, the sandstone boulders in Joe’s Valley absorb moisture and become fragile. Water travels through cracks and behind holds, expanding these small gaps until… snap …your favorite hold is off of the boulder and in your hand. While factors like cloud coverage and wind can drastically change how quickly the rock dries, a good starting point is to wait 24-48 hours after precipitation to climb. Keep an eye out for damp soil around the boulders, water streaks on the boulders, and visible moisture inside the holds. All of these are signs to take another rest day and #ProtectOurClassics.
